If you cast your mind back to 2020, you may recall that Amazon had snapped up the TV rights to writer Stieg Larsson’s Millennium book series, with plans to develop a TV series around Lisbeth Salander, protagonist of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and its subsequent entries.
It’s been all quiet on the project since, however it seems that Amazon Studios is now ready to start moving forward with the new from Variety that Veena Sud has signed on to serve as showrunner on the series. Sud is best known as showrunner on The Killing, the US TV adaptation of the Danish series Forbrydelsen, while her other credits include Netflix’s Seven Seconds and Blumhouse film The Lie.
Originally it was reported that while the series would adopt the title The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo from the first book in the series, it would feature an original storyline featuring Lisbeth Salander – a character originally portrayed by Noomi Rapace in the Swedish film trilogy along with Rooney Mara in David Fincher’s U.S. adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Claire Foy in 2018’s The Girl in the Spider’s Web. It is unclear at this point whether that remains the plan.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios, along with Sony’s Left Bank Pictures.
