The Invisible Man director is looking to tackle another iconic Universal Monster, with Deadline is reporting that Leigh Whannell is in talks to direct Wolfman, a re-imagining of the 1941 horror film The Wolf Man. Ryan Gosling will star in the lead role with Jason Blum and his company Blumhouse coming on board to produce along with Gosling.
Whannell is also writing a treatment for the film, stemming from an original idea of his own and taking inspiration from the Lon Chaney Jr. classic. Lauren Schuker Blum and Orange Is the New Black‘s Rebecca Angelo will pen the script.
Blumhouse and director recently teamed to much success with 2020’s The Invisible Man, grossing over $120 million worldwide on just a $7 million budget. He also directed Upgrade for the studio, another low-budget horror that’s gained a cult following. This upcoming film will be Whannell and Blumhouse’s seventh collaboration.
Reports say that Whannell and Gosling have wanted to work together for quite some, but Whannell didn’t want to return to the Universal Monsters so soon after his latest effort. However Lauren Schuker Blum, wife of Jason Blum, is said to have asked the director to reconsider.
