Phil Lord and Chris Miller have been tapped up by Sony to write and produce a new animated Spider-Man movie. The announcement was made at the recent CinemaCon event in Las Vegas.
The guys behind The LEGO Movie and both Jump Street flicks will apparently only write a treatment and act as producers for now but considering their knack for animation and humour – something that Spidey movies have lacked – there’s every chance they could direct too.
The movie’s release date is penned in for July 20 2018. That may seem like it gives Lord and Miller plenty of time to bang out a treatment but the duo are gonna be extremely busy over the next few years having already signed up to work on a sequel to The LEGO Movie and Warner Bros/DC’s The Flash. They will also serve as producers on 23 Jump Street, a LEGO Batman spin-off movie and a Ninjago big screen adaptation. There’s also the small matter of the constant rumours that the duo are somehow involved with the Channing Tatum on/off again all-male Ghostbusters reboot but that particularly movie seems out of their reach now (if it ever actually happens)
While on-stage in Las Vegas Chairman of Sony Pictures Tom Rothman initially stated that the new animated movie will “co-exist” with the upcoming Spidey movies which is a blatant contradiction to what the official press release states. It says “The film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe”. Rothman then went on to say that the project is going to be “fucking awesome.”
