With Amazon having acquired MGM/United Artists recently, they are mining several films and TV shows from MGM’s IP for a new, rebooted version on their streaming service. One of the projects Amazon has greenlit is a series reboot of The Magnificent Seven helmed by True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto.
Pizzolatto had originally pitched his own Western series to Amazon that would follow a former outlaw assembling a gang as his past comes back to haunt him. The idea became a new take on The Magnificent Seven due to Amazon Studios wanting to place it among a familiar and well-known film from MGM/United as well as Pizzolatto’s own experience with The Magnificent Seven having co-written the 2016 remake directed by Antione Fuqua starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke and more.
The synopsis for Pizzolatto’s The Magnificent Seven reads:
In the tradition of the great epics from the golden age of westerns, an outlaw and his cohorts must unite a disparate band of indelible fighters to defend a settlement of immigrant homesteaders in an open range war against cattle barons in central Texas, telling an expansive saga of adventure, action and romance.
The Magnificent Seven will be executive produced by Pizzolatto, Mark Johnson (Better Call Saul), Lawrence Mirisch and Bruce Kaufman.
The series will be based on the 1960 feature The Magnificent Seven, which itself was a Western remake of Akira Kurosawa’s Japanese film Seven Samurai, starring Steve McQueen. The original film was a huge success and spawned a franchise of its own that includes sequels, a short-lived TV series that aired from 1998 to 2000 and the 2016 remake.
