British 1980’s gaming icon Monty Mole will be arriving on the Nintendo Switch store on 8th January bringing waves of nostalgia to every gamer that had a Spectrum, Commodore 64 or Amstrad back in the day. The Monty Mole Collection, developed by Imagine Software, brings 4 Monty Mole titles plus a bonus game starring Sam Stoat. Watch the new trailer below….
The Monty Mole Collection brings all the classic Monty Mole platforming fun that players will want, starting with….
Wanted! Monty Mole – This first episode in the successful Monty series was originally released back in 1984 and, inspired by the actual miner’s strikes that plunged the country into darkness, saw players control Monty as he carried out a coal burglary at his local South Yorkshire pit. Monty will need to avoid numerous nasty creatures and obstacles before surfacing in Arthur’s castle (alluding to Arthur Scargill rather than King Arthur) to defeat him with the all important ballot paper.
The success of Wanted, led to the release of Monty on the Run in 1985. This far superior sequel had Monty being freed from his cell in Scudmore Prison by Sam Stoat. Though free, he is being sought by the authorities so players will need to guide Monty past an assortment of enemies and hazards while collecting gold coins so he can get on the cross-channel ferry.
Monty’s story continued in 1987 with Auf Wiedersehen Monty. In this sequel, Monty is on the continent but is being hounded by ‘Intermole’. Monty needs to journey across Europe, collecting enough money so that he can buy his very own private Mediterranean island. Players will need to traverse more platforms, avoid more enemies and obstacles and collect enough cash to fulfil his dream.
The final Monty tale was one that was originally released on the cover tape for the 1987 Christmas edition of Your Sinclair magazine and called Moley Christmas. This is a four level platformer that will have players jumping, climbing, picking up items and avoiding dangers in order to take the Moley Christmas game to the Your Sinclair Magazine headquarters. It’s all a bit meta.
The very final game in the collection is Sam Stoat: Safebreaker (released 1985). This extremely tricky platformer will have players stealing diamonds by collecting bombs and matches, leaping over death defying platforms to find the safe and blow it up.
The Monty Mole Collection will feature both the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 versions of the games, different difficulty levels and display filters (including one that emulates a CRT filter), Suspend Points to save the game and a Live Rewind feature that rewinds 10 seconds. Having played these games on the Spectrum back in the day, you WILL need this rewind feature.
You can pre-order The Monty Mole Collection now on the Nintendo store ahead of its release on 8th January.
