Earlier this month, the long-delayed The New Mutants popped up for pre-order on Amazon, prompting speculation that Disney had finally given up on a theatrical release for the troubled X-Men spinoff and would instead send it straight-to-streaming/digital.
Well, it seems that isn’t the case after all, as Disney has now announced that the Josh Boone-directed movie will open in cinemas on August 28th, assuming of course there are no further delays or any kind of second wave of the current health crisis.
Disney had planned to open the Fox-produced title on April 3rd, but that was foiled by the shutdown, with the movie then going undated until now. It was initially supposed to open on April 13th 2018, a date that was subsequently pushed to February 22nd 2019 and then August 2nd 2019 before Fox just gave up on it and left it gathering dust on the shelf until it became Disney’s problem.

Despite Wonder Woman 1984 releasing two weeks earlier, competition for The New Mutants will be light and those brave enough to venture into theaters will be starved of big screen content. With that in mind, a late August release date for a movie expected to tank heavily anyway could ultimately prove to be a smart move by Disney.
