If you’re a fan still waiting for The Purge 6, join franchise creator James DeMonaco in the wait.
The main producer/director/screenwriter behind The Purge films is opening up about what’s taking so long for what could be one of the most epic franchise entries and claims that Universal Pictures is keeping it in its state of limbo.
Speaking to Playlist, DeMonaco sheds some light on what happens in the sixth entry, letting fans know how wild things could be for this universe.
“I wrote the script. Universal has seen it. There are concerns about budget, but it definitely presents a fractured America,” states the filmmaker. “The America I present in Purge 6 is where we all are separated by ideology and sexual preference. So, the states are broken down in different ways.”
As for when it could begin production, he stresses the delay stems from budgetary restrictions, not any creative issues. DeMonaco notes, “It’s written; it’s in [Universal’s] hands. I think they’re scared about the budget. But my thing was if I was going to come back and direct a sixth one, it was going to be something bigger and a little more epic in scope, with this new America I want to present and bringing back [Frank Grillo’s] character. So, it’s kinda in limbo.”
The Purge has found success across television and films; the budgets matched the box office as it grew from a small $3 million to $18 million for the fifth. Sadly, that fifth entry, released in 2021, only made $77 million at the worldwide box office, a far cry from the $137 million worldwide gross of the fourth film.
James DeMonaco is awaiting the release of his upcoming movie, The Home, a horror film with Pete Davidson in the lead. There’s no set release date for the film.
