USA Network is returning to a format that once made them famous with a new legal drama heading to TV.
Deadline reports that The Rainmaker has received a series order. Writer Michael Seitzman (Code Black) is behind the series, which is based on the bestselling John Grisham novel and its film adaptation.
In The Rainmaker, we follow a fresh-out-of-law school student, Rudy Baylor, who goes head-to-head with courtroom lion Leo Drummond and his law school girlfriend. Rudy, along with his boss and her disheveled paralegal, uncovers two connected conspiracies surrounding the mysterious death of their client’s son.
It should be noted that this is USA Network’s first new scripted series in some time, and it looks to be part of the Blue Sky brand. This programming initiative reportedly involves developing an hourlong series with budgets in the $2M-$3M an episode, which attempts to bring prestige back to basic cable.
There was a 1997 movie written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola based on Grisham’s novel, which starred Matt Damon, Claire Danes, Jon Voight, Mary Kay Place, Mickey Rourke, Danny DeVito, Danny Glover, Roy Scheider, Virginia Madsen, and Teresa Wright.
