Earlier this month it was reported that The Russo Brothers had been turned away from directing duties on Avengers 5, but Marvel Studios appear to have performed a U-turn with the news that the siblings who steered Endgame to $2 billion at the box-office are in talks to return to helm the next two Avengers outings.
According to The Hollywood Reporter Joe and Anthony Russo are in early talks to add to their tally of four MCU movies – Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame – and direct the untitled Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Following Endgame The Russo Brothers turned their attention to producing and directing expensive action vehicles for Amazon (Citadel) and Netflix (The Gray Man and forthcoming sci-fi The Electric State), but Marvel’s recent troubles, which has included a complete rethink of the previously titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty after Jonathan Majors’ assault conviction, has forced them to turn to a safe pair of hands.
Captain America: Brave New World has been going through expensive reshoots, with its $275 million budget adding around $75-100 million, while the current MCU production slate is in a state of flux, with Blade‘s much publicised production issues and various Disney+ projects going on hold. Reports had suggested that Deadpool & Wolverine helmer Shawn Levy was in talks with Marvel about the vacant Avengers director’s chair, but Deadline reports that he is focusing on other projects, including his Star Wars film.
