The Russos explain why Superman is so hard to get right on film

December 12, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Anthony and Joe Russo, directors of Avengers: Endgame, have explained why adapting Superman for film is such a hard task.

There have been numerous Superman film adaptations over the years, some more successful than others, and while all have their fans, there is no question that the character is one of the hardest heroes to bring the big screen.

Why is this? Well, according to Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of Avengers: Infinity War (and no strangers to superhero adaptations), when a hero is as powerful as Superman, you run into some problems. Speaking to Business Insider, Joe said: “He’s a very difficult character. You have to find an emotional flaw or weakness in the character in order to make them vulnerable.”

His brother Anthony then added: “The more powerful a character is, the more difficult to deal with that character on a narrative level. As storytellers, and the way we explore characters, we always look for vulnerabilities in characters because that’s where characters become interesting. They’re superficially interesting in their strength, but they get much more depth when you find where they don’t have that kind of strength. In general, the more powerful a character is, the more tricky that is.”

Hopefully, we will get a new Superman movie that manages to hit all the right marks in the near future, although based on recent reports, Warner Bros. doesn’t seem to have any big screen plans for the Man of Steel at present.
