It’s already the longest running sitcom in history, and now The Simpsons is set to enter the record books once more, with Fox renewing the show for a 29th and 30th season, which will take it to 669 episodes in total, shattering the record of 635 set by Gunsmoke.
“This is yet another record-setting moment for what is truly a landmark series,” said Fox CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman. “The Simpsons has meant so much to the network, the studio and everyone at Fox, and its continued cultural impact around the globe is a testament to the combined brilliance of Matt Groening, Jim Brooks and Al Jean. Congratulations to everyone who works on this groundbreaking series – from the voice cast and producers to the writers and production team– you comprise one of the greatest collections of creative talent in the history of the medium. And to the millions of Simpsons fans around the world, thank you for watching all these years. We’re happy to tell you there’s lots more to come.”
Meanwhile, speaking to LRM, executive producer Brooks has revealed that Fox is also keen to get a sequel to The Simpsons Movie off the ground, stating that: “Fox very much wants us to do another one, and maybe we will and maybe we won’t—that’s where it is. How do we divide our labors, and do we believe in the idea we have? We may go into a more active exploration of a second movie soon.”
