The U.S box office has witnessed its lowest Memorial Day weekend since way back in 1999.
The four day weekend is usually a good time for box office receipts with families in the U.S looking to take a trip to their local theaters.
But this hasn’t been the case in 2017 as this year’s films have performed poorly bringing in a measly $172.3 million, the lowest since 99’s $142.5 million.
This summer has been pretty dour for motion pictures commercially; Alien: Covenant has under-performed, Baywatch and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword also both landed with a thud.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has been the one shining star and managed to hold onto second place during the four day weekend with a take of $25 million, putting its domestic total at $338 million.
Taking the top spot was unsurprisingly another Disney offering, with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales bringing in $77 million. The fifth film in the franchise will be looking abroad for the vast majority of its takings.
June promises to be more fruitful for the movie business however, with blockbusters like Wonder Woman on the way, and being well received by critics.
