Jay Roach is looking to revamp The War of the Roses with a new version titled The Roses.
Per insider Daniel Richtman, Roach will helm The Roses, which will star Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman as the feuding couple. Tony McNamara writes the film, which comes from producers Roach, Adam Ackland, Leah Clarke, Ed Sinclair, Tom Carver, and Michelle Graham.
This version is a modern-day retelling of the original 1989 film based on a 1981 novel of the same name. That film starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, following a wealthy couple with a seemingly perfect marriage. When their marriage begins to fall apart, material possessions become the center of an outrageous and bitter divorce battle.
The official synopsis for the film reads: “Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Theo (Cumberbatch) and Ivy (Colman): successful careers, great kids, an enviable sex life. But underneath the façade of the perfect family is a tinderbox of competition and resentments that’s ignited when Theo’s professional dreams come crashing down. Marital bliss erupts into a hilariously ferocious battle of wills in this dark comedy about love, power, and the lengths we’ll go to win.”
The Roses is currently shooting in the United Kingdom.
