The second season of Amazon’s fantasy series The Wheel of Time has added Ayoola Smart (Killing Eve) to its cast. Showrunner Rafe Judkins made the announcement at Jordancon while discussing the second season.
Smart will play Aviendha, “a Wise One of the Nine Valleys sept of the Taardad Aiel and one of the three lovers of Rand al’Thor.” She joins an ensemble cast led by Rosemund Pike, Daniel Henney, Josha Stradowski, Madeleine Madden, Zoe Robbins and Marcus Rutherford.
The series follows a small group of young adults who are rescued by Moiraine, a powerful member of the mysterious Aes Sedai, after their village is attacked by evil forces. Moiraine believes one of them to be the Dragon Reborn, a powerful individual who is prophesied to either save the world or destroy it as he or she combats the Dark One and his armies from conquering the world.
The Wheel of Time is based on the sprawling fantasy series by Robert Jordan. First published in 1990, Jordan’s epic concluded in 2013 with 14 books in the main series along with one prequel and two companion books. Jordan unfortunately didn’t live to see the completion of his series after passing away in 2007. His wife Hariet McDougal selected Mistborn author Brandon Sanderson to write the final three books after Jordan left the major plot points and notes so the story could be completed.
The Wheel of Time season 2 is currently in production in Prague.
Set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists and only certain women are allowed to access it, the story follows Moiraine, a member of the incredibly powerful all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, as she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers. There, she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity.
The Wheel of Time features a cast that includes Rosamund Pike, Daniel Henney, Josha Stradowski, Alvaro Morte, Sophie Okonedo, Kae Alexander, Madeleine Madden, Zoe Robins, Michael McElhatton, Barney Harris, and Marcus Rutherford.
