NBC’s hit drama series This Is Us is coming to an end with its sixth season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Though NBC has yet to make an official announcement, that will come on Friday when the network presents its fall schedule for the 2021 – 2022 television season.
The news This Is Us will end next year isn’t too surprising given series creator Dan Fogelman has spoken several times before about his six-season plan for the show and already knowing how it will end. In 2019, NBC renewed the series for three more seasons at the conclusion of its third season, at which time Fogelman referred to it as the “midpoint” for the series, a statement which now seems to be quite literal with the sixth and final season.
This Is Us follows the Pearson family, played by Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, Sterling K. Brown, Justin Hartley and Chrissy Metz, across the decades of their lives. The series jumps back and forth through time periods to show Ventimiglia and Moore’s Jack and Rebecca Pearson struggle with raising three children, the trio’s hardships as adults in their personal and professional lives and even teasing the distant futures they and their children share. Also starring in the series is Susan Kelechi Watson, Chris Sullivan and Jon Huertas.
Over its soon-to-be six season run, This Is Us has been one of the biggest hits on network television with a strong audience each week and garnering multiple awards and nominations from several sources, including Brown as Outstanding Lead Actor for the first season of the series along with nominations in the acting categories for several cast members alongside directing and writing noms.
