Thor: Ragnarok outperforming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 with $107.6 million international opening weekend

October 29, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Marvel’s latest superhero blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok began its international roll out earlier this week, with the Taika Waititi-helmed threequel opening in around 52% of the markets and scoring an impressive $107.6 million opening weekend.

Early tracking had suggested an opening in the range of $85 million to $100 million, but stellar reviews and strong word of mouth have helped the movie to surpass that, putting it 4% ahead of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and 22% up on Doctor Strange when looking at the same markets.

The top markets include the UK ($15.8 million), Korea ($15.5 million), Australia ($8.4 million), Brazil ($8.3 million) and France ($7.4 million).

Thor: Ragnarok will make its North American debut this coming Friday, and is said to be tracking around $100 million for its domestic opening weekend. However, given its success so far, don’t be surprised it it exceeds that figure.

In Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Ragnarok,” Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok—the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization—at the hands of an all-powerful threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger—the Incredible Hulk.

Thor: Ragnarok is directed by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) and features a cast that includes Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Idris Elba as Heimdall and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, Karl Urban as Skurge, Taika Waititi as Korg, Clancy Brown as Surtur, Rachel House as Topaz, Tadanobu Asano as Hogun, Ray Stevenson as Volstagg and Zachary Levi as Fandral.
