Thor: Ragnarok scribe to pen Sony’s Masters of the Universe reboot

August 20, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

Christopher Yost, the screenwriter behind Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World and the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok, is set to help Sony relise their long-gestating reboot of 80’s toyline/cartoon/film Masters of the Universe, reports Variety.

Sony and Escape Artists have been working for years trying to get the reboot off the ground, and have tapped Yost to rewrite the script for the film, for which Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) have previously written drafts. Given Yost’s work with Thor, which has many similarities to the Masters characters, it’s not surprising he has been sought out.

Set on the mystical planet of Eternia, the story follows Prince Adam, a warrior who is given the power to transform into hero He-Man, who must do battle against arch-nemesis Skeletor, a villain who wants control of the universe and the magical Castle Grayskull.

The toyline was made into the hit cartoon series by Filmation called He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, which ran between 1983-1985. Its popu led to a first motion picture, Masters of the Universe, produced by The Cannon Group in 1987, and starred Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella. It was box-office flop at the time but has since become a global cult classic.
