Thor: Ragnarok’s early box office projections point to $100 million domestic opening

September 9, 2017 by Amie Cranswick

With the release of Thor: Ragnarok fast approaching, Box Office Pro has unveiled the first “long range forecast” for the Marvel threequel’s domestic opening weekend, suggesting that the Taiki Waititi-directed cosmic adventure is looking at an opening of $100 million, and a total North American gross of around $250 million.

Should those figures prove accurate, Ragnarok would enjoy the biggest domestic opening for a Thor movie, surpassing the $65 million of the original film, and the $85 million debut of Thor: The Dark World. The films went on to gross $181 million and $206 million respectively during their U.S. theatrical runs, and $449 million and $645 million worldwide.

While Ragnarok is currently tracking well above the God of Thunder’s previous solo outings, a $100 million debut would put it behind the MCU’s two other releases this year, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opening to $147 million and Spider-Man: Homecoming $117 million.

In Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Ragnarok,” Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok—the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization—at the hands of an all-powerful threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger—the Incredible Hulk.

Thor: Ragnarok is being directed by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) and features Marvel veterans Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Idris Elba as Heimdall and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk alongside Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, Karl Urban as Skurge, Taika Waititi as Korg, Clancy Brown as Surtur, Rachel House as Topaz, and Sam Neill in an as-yet-unrevealed role. It is set for release on October 24th in the UK and November 3rd in the States.
