Remember Jean-Claude Van Damme’s 1994 epic time travelling action flick Timecop? No? Hey, it wasn’t that bad was it? It was announced last year that a remake was in the works and now Universal have revealed the writing pair behind the new script will be cousins Mark and Brian Gunn. The duo have previously scribed for Journey 2 and are currently working on its sequel. They’ve also been linked with the rumoured remake of 1987 kids horror classic The Monster Squad.
Timecop is based on a comic book from Dark Horse Comics written by Mark Richardson about an enforcement officer in the near future whose job it is to regulate the use of time travel. The original movie (which is actually one of Van Damme’s better offerings) racked in a healthy $100 million worldwide and spawned a sequel starring Jason Scott Lee, but has been on Universal’s remake list for a number of years now.
Mark Shmuger, the man behind The Spectacular Now and We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks is currently on board to produce with original writer Mark Richardson executive producing. The Hollywood Reporter are saying that “this version of Timecop is a more gritty and grounded police story with the sci-fi in the background, though it will still have the main character on a journey.” No director or actors have been linked yet but expect news to filter out once the script is complete.
