Todd McFarlane says creative differences are holding up Spawn reboot

June 1, 2019 by Ricky Church

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about Todd McFarlane’s Spawn reboot, a project that has been in development for a very long time. The film, which is set to star Jamie Foxx as Al Simmons/Spawn and Jeremy Renner as Detective Twitch Williams, is supposed to begin production this summer with Blumhouse Productions financing, but there’s been little movement on the project. Speaking with ComicBook, McFarlane revealed the agreement on the script is one reason for slow progress.

“The money’s sitting on the sidelines ready to go. I just need to get everyone that wants to put in money to shake their heads to the same script,” McFlarlane explained. “As you can imagine, everyone has a slightly different version of it in their head. You just go and trying to appease a handful of people while not giving in to what it is that I’m trying to do myself. Because if I have to change it too much, I’ll just walk away from it all.”

McFarlane, who created Spawn in 1992, has written the script and will make his directorial feature debut for the film. He has previously promised the reboot will be a  “dark, ugly two hours worth of movie” with a “deeply serious, dark, almost disturbing R-version of a superhero character.” Rumoured plot details say the film will revolve around Twitch on a quest for vengeance after the death of his family due to gang violence and meets Spawn in the course of his investigation.

Spawn was previously made into a film in 1997 with Michael Jai White as the titular antihero and John Leguizamo as Spawn’s enemy, The Violator. Though it made a modest amount at the box office, it was panned by both critics and fans. HBO also made an animated series with Keith David voicing Spawn.

We’ll have to wait and see for any more updates on the Spawn reboot and McFarlane’s script if he and any studios come to an agreement on the plot.
