Despite the fact that Jared Leto-headlined Joker solo movie was announced earlier this month, it seems that Warner Bros. and DC Films are still pushing ahead with their plans for a non-DCEU Joker origin film.
According to Omega Underground, production on the project – which is being directed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover), with Martin Scorsese (The Departed) producing – is set to begin this September, with New York City standing in for 1980s Gotham City.
A September start would seem to suggest that the movie – which is expected to see Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime – will likely be released in 2019, alongside the DCEU instalments Shazam and Wonder Woman 1984.
If the above information is accurate, then presumably an official announcement will be forthcoming soon – likely at the DC Films panel at the San Diego Comic-Con International next month, where we’ll also see the unveiling of the first Aquaman trailer as well as a rumoured rebranding of the DC Extended Universe.
