With the latest chapter Mission: Impossible – Fallout setting a franchise high opening weekend at the box office, the Mission: Impossible franchise is certainly showing no signs of slowing down despite being six entries and 22 years into its run.
Given the critical and commercial success of Fallout, a seventh entry in the series is inevitable, but short of heading into outer space it’s getting difficult to think of how Tom Cruise could possibly top the crazy stunts the franchise is renowned for. Well, as it turns out, going into space is actually something Cruise has considered!
“We’ve thought about it,” Cruise tells Collider. “It’s like how do we do it? It’s the mechanics of getting it there. How do you build a sequence there and how long can we have that sequence? Because if I went up and just dropped, it’s the kind of time — how do you put that into the structure of a screenplay of a Mission? When we’re doing these things, there’s so much story going on. As opposed to just a cool shot, we want character and story going throughout. I can’t help but look at that building up here or at the Eiffel Tower and seeing stories. What could the team do and what could we do? But we have thought about that.”
Typically, when a franchise heads into space it’s usually time to call it a day, but Mission: Impossible may be the exception to that rule – particularly with Cruise’s penchant for pulling of practical stunts. Maybe it’s time to make that call to Elon Musk…
