Last month Skydance Productions CEO David Ellison confirmed that there’s a role for Maverick in the planned sequel to 1986’s Top Gun, and now speaking at the premiere of his latest film Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Tom Cruise has revealed that he’s open to a return for Top Gun 2, on the condition that the jet sequences are realised without any CGI.
“If I can figure it out, if all of us can figure it out, it’d be fun to do, I’d like to fly those jets again, but we got to do all the jets practical, no CGI on the jets,” Cruise told Extra TV. “I’m saying right now no CGI on the jets. If we can figure all that out, and the Department of Defense will allow us to do it, that would be fun.”
Plot details for Top Gun 2 are scarce, but Ellison has stated that the film will deal with drone technology, and “exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots.”
