Last week Tom Cruise revealed that Top Gun 2 is “definitely happening” and will likely shoot in 2018, and now the star has been chatting to Access Hollywood about the sequel, revealing that it is currently going by the title of Top Gun: Maverick, referring to his character’s nickname in the original gilm.
“Aviators are back, the need for speed,” said Cruise during a promotional interview for his new film The Mummy. “We’re going to have big, fast machines. It’s going to be a competition film, like the first one… but a progression for Maverick.”
According to rumours, Oblivion helmer Joseph Kosinski is said to be the frontrunner to direct the film, which is thought to explore the rise in unmanned drone technology and a dying fighter jet and aerial fighting program. Cruise refused to be drawn into whether he’d be joined by any returning stars from the 1986 original, although Val Kilmer has already expressed his interest in returning as Maverick’s former rival turned buddy Iceman.
