Despite the passing of director Tony Scott back in 2012, there have been several comments from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and star Tom Cruise over the past few years suggesting that the long-gestating sequel to Top Gun is still on the cards, and now Cruise has revealed that the project is close to moving forward.
Speaking to Australian TV show Sunrise on the promotional tour for his new movie The Mummy, Cruise confirmed that Top Gun 2 “is definitely happening [and I’m] gonna start filming it probably in the next year.”
The last we heard about Top Gun 2 was back in January 2016 when Cruise and Bruckheimer revealed that they had met to discuss the sequel. Previous comments from producer David Ellison had revealed that Justin Marks’ (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li) screenplay would explore the rise of drone technology and the end of the era of dogfighting and fighter pilots.
