Variety is reporting that Tom Hanks is set to star in a new movie based upon the 1960s action figure line Major Matt Mason, which is in development at Paramount Pictures and Mattel Films.
Launching in 1966 at the height of the space race, Major Matt Mason is an astronaut who lives and works on the moon, and teams with fellow astronauts Sgt. Storm, Lt. Jeff Long and Doug Davis and the alien entity Captain Lazer to thwart hostile extraterrestrial threats.
The Matt Mason movie was first announced back in 2011, with Hanks attached to star and co-write with Graham Yost (Band of Brothers), although it failed to move forward. This new attempt is now being scripted by Akiva Goldsman (The Da Vinci Code) from a short story by Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Chabon.
Hanks is currently on the festival circuit for his latest film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, where he plays the beloved children’s TV personality Fred Rogers. Check out interviews from the red carpet premiere at Toronto International Film Festival here…
