Shaun Munro runs down his top 10 movies of 2020 (so far)…
2020 has certainly been a year so far, and though the global closure of cinemas has resulted in countless anticipated blockbuster movies being pushed back to dates undetermined, it has nevertheless allowed small-screen viewing to flourish.
While we’ve all been missing the thrill of munching through a bag of popcorn and soaking in a glossy new tentpole on the biggest screen possible, film lovers haven’t been left wanting for quality releases – from low-key indies perfectly suited to the streaming experience, to those more high-profile movies sent to VOD as part of the current studio exhibition experiment.
Between the small batch of movies which actually did hit cinemas in the first quarter of the year, and the huge avalanche of content we’ve all had piped directly into our homes since, the best-of-year conversation continues regardless of the industry’s understandable unease.
And so, from card-carrying tentpoles to more slight, unassuming arthouse jaunts, these are my top 10 movies of the year so far. We can only hope that the remainder of 2020 is this strong – if not more so…
