Travis Knight’s Masters of the Universe movie will get a theatrical release

May 2, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

Following the discourse surrounding Amazon MGM’s release strategy for Road House, it appears that the studio won’t follow suit with their long-gestating live-action Masters of the Universe movie, with the news that the film will receive a theatrical release.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the Travis Knight (Bumblebee, Kubo and the Two Strings) directed adaptation for Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel will get a June 5, 2026 worldwide theatrical release.

The official synopsis for Masters of the Universe reads “10-year-old Prince Adam who crashed to Earth in a spaceship and was separated from his magical Power Sword—the only link to his home on Eternia. After tracking it down almost two decades later, Prince Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam will first need to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man: the most powerful man in the Universe!”

Prince Adam’s journey to the big-screen has been a turbulent one, with Netflix ploughing $30 million in pre-production development on their own adaptation, before they decided to scrap the project due to a reported budget of almost $200 million, with Amazon subsequently snapping up the rights.

Masters of the Universe tells the story of the orphan Adam, who comes to discover he’s destined to save a faraway land from the threat of an evil wizard named Skeletor. Starting life as a toy line from Mattel in 1982, Masters of the Universe quickly became popular and spawned the animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe followed by She-Ra: Princess of Power. A live-action film was made in 1987 which starred Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella as He-Man and Skeletor respectively, and though it bombed at the box-office, it has since earned a cult following among fans.
