It has been over a decade since Tron: Legacy with plenty of vocal Tron fans clamouring for a sequel and it looks like a third film is finally going to be in development. Deadline reports Joachim Rønning (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil) is in talks to direct Tron: Ares, the title of the third film, starring Jared Leto (House of Gucci) in the lead role.
Tron was first released in 1982 starring Jeff Bridges as he is transported into a digital mainframe called the Grid and forced to compete in gladiatorial combat. While it wasn’t a hit at the box office, it was praised for its groundbreaking special effects and grew a cult following over the decades.
In 2010 Top Gun: Maverick‘s Joseph Kosinski directed TRON: Legacy with Bridges reprising his role as Kevin Flynn and Clu alongside Garrett Hedlund as his son Sam and Olivia Wilde as an advanced computer program named Quorra.
These are still early negotiations so we’ll have to wait for official word if Rønning will direct Tron: Ares. Leto has been attached to star for a couple years, but there has not been any word if Bridges, Hedlund or Wilde will reprise their roles in the anticipated sequel. This isn’t the first time, though, that Disney has attempted development on a third Tron film after losing a couple of directors in the past so hopefully Tron fans will have something more concrete to look forward to this time around.
Tron: Ares has been written by Jesse Wigutow and will be produced by Leto, Justin Springer, Jeffrey Silver and Emma Ludbrook with Sean Bailey and Sam Dickerman executive producing. Production is expected to begin in August 2023 in Vancouver.
