As we enter October, we’re now just a few short weeks away from the year’s final superhero movie Doctor Strange, and Marvel’s marketing department has certainly made sure we’re aware of that fact this week as they unleashed a host of promotional material from the Phase Three blockbuster. Among the goodies arriving online this week was an IMAX trailer offering some new footage [watch it here], character posters for Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme, Benedict Wong’s Wong, Rachel McAdams’ Christine Palmer, Tilda Swinton’s The Ancient One, Mads Mikkelsen’s Kaecilius and Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Karl Mordo [see here and here], a big batch of images [see here], and a series of trippy character motion posters [see here and here]…
…As well as confirming his appearance in Avengers: Infinity War, Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed that he almost missed out on the part of Doctor Strange due to scheduling conflicts, with director Scott Derrickson then meeting with the likes of Jared Leto, Ryan Gosling and Joaquin Phoenix before Marvel decided to push back the schedule in order to accommodate his casting: “[I] really did think I had to kiss it goodbye. If you can’t jump on board when the ride’s going past, that’s usually it. So the hugest compliment they paid me was to come back to me. It motivated me to try to fulfill their faith in me…”
…Having wrapped filming in Atlanta last week, Spider-Man: Homecoming moved to New York City to continue production, with Tom Holland sharing a set photo of himself in full costume (well, sans mask) as the wall-crawler to mark his first day in Queens [see here], while some rather nice set photos surfaced showing Spidey performing some stunt sequences [see here]. Meanwhile – and get your pinch of salt at the ready here – but if rumours are to be believed, the character of Nightwatch could be set to appear in Homecoming, as Sony executives have reportedly been picking up as many copies of Nightwatch comics as possible for research purposes, and that he may be played by Bokeem Woodbine. Now, you’d have to imagine if he was going to appear in the film they’d not wait until they were months into production to start doing research, while there’s plenty of evidence to suggest Woodbine is playing Shocker, including images of him in costume…
…In other Spider-Man news, Daniel Radcliffe has revealed that he’d have loved the role of the wall-crawler, with the Harry Potter star saying that: “I would’ve been a good Spider-Man but the boat has sailed on that and I’m very happy to watch Tom Holland do it. He’s fantastic.” Meanwhile, in an exclusive interview here at Flickering Myth, Scott Davis spoke to Spider-Man contender Asa Butterfield, who also praised Tom Holland, and said that he’s actually more of a DC fan, and would love a role in the DC Extended Universe. You can read Butterfield’s comments here…
…Marvel has added another villain to the Black Panther movie, with Person of Interest star Winston Duke is set to play the character of M’Baku, a.k.a. Man-Ape, who is one of Wakanda’s most powerful warriors, who frequently tries to usurp the Black Panther from the throne. Duke joins a cast that sees Chadwick Boseman reprising his role as T’Challa from Captain America: Civil War alongside Lupita Nyong’o (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) as Nakia, Michael B. Jordan (Fantastic Four) as Erik Killmonger, and Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead) as Okoye…
…Speaking of Black Panther, we also got a VFX breakdown video looking at the CGI work used to bring T’Challa to life in Captain America: Civil War [watch it here], while concept artist Andy Park also unveiled some Civil War keyframe art showing Ant-Man’s transformation into Giant-Man [see here]. Meanwhile, during an awards consideration screening, the Russo brothers and Kevin Feige spoke about the lack of deaths in Civil War, revealing that they did consider killing Captain America and another Avenger, but ultimately felt that “the tragedy is that the family falls apart. Not that the family falls apart and somebody dies.” You can read their full comments on the subject here…
…During the Civil War screening, Kevin Feige also revealed that Stan Lee has already shot his customary cameos for FOUR upcoming MCU films: “We do not shoot random [cameos]. They’re always specific. A couple of months ago in Atlana, [Stan Lee] flew down and we shot four in one day — for four various projects. They’re all awesome! They’re all totally different. And he was unbelievable. He was on fire. He came in, he sat here, he stood there, he stood in this window, and then he went home.” Although Feige didn’t elaborate on which movies the cameos were for, we’d have to assume Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok…
…Jurassic Park star Sam Neill revealed this week that he’s set to reunite with Hunt for the Wilderpeople director Taika Waititi on Thor: Ragnarok, with Neill stating that: “I’m not really allowed to say this, and I can’t tell you what it is [but] I did a couple of days on Thor, just before I came over here. I had to sign all sorts of things that say if I say anything else, Marvel’s Secret Agents, and they are lethal, will come and get me, and probably my children as well.” Meanwhile, Waititi also shared a rather amusing photo of him letting off some steam on the set of the Marvel blockbuster, which you can see here…
…Marvel’s latest Netflix series Luke Cage arrived yesterday, and you can check out a new trailer for the show here, along with the opening title credits [see here] and a Street Level Hero featurette focussing on the location of Harlem [see here]. Meanwhile, actress Simone Missick has confirmed that she’ll be reuniting with Mike Colter next year as she reprises the role of Misty Knight for The Defenders: “I believe I’m safe to say that I will be on The Defenders,” said the actress. “Spoiler alert! If I lose my job because of this interview, sorry! I was supposed to be on The Defenders, until I got fired…”
…Back in the early 90s, Quentin Tarantino came close to directing a Luke Cage movie, and so he was asked this week what he’d like to see from the Netflix series: “Well, frankly, to tell you the truth, I might be one of the pains in their asses because I love the way the character was presented so much in the ’70s. I’m not really that open to a rethinking on who he was. I just think that first issue, that origin issue … was so good, and it was really Marvel’s attempt to try to do a blacksploitation movie vibe as one of their superhero comics. And I thought they nailed it. Absolutely nailed it. So, just take that Issue #1 and put it in script form and do that…”
…Over at ABC, we’ve got a promo and images for Tuesday’s third episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season four, entitled ‘Uprising’ [see here], and be sure to check out Danny Hale’s reviews of episode one ‘The Ghost’ here and episode two ‘Meet the New Boss’ here…
…With her new show Conviction set to get underway on Monday, Hayley Atwell has been speaking about the potential future of Peggy Carter following ABC’s cancellation of Agent Carter earlier this year, with the actress stating that she’s been pestering Marvel for a solo movie: “I hound [Marvel Studios co-president Louis] D’Esposito on a regular basis, saying, ‘Give me a movie!’ I think the great thing about Peggy is, we know from Winter Soldier that she lives a long life, so she can come back. I’m banking on, when I’m in my fifties, I’m like, ‘This is the time. Let’s see what Peggy’s up to in this decade…'”
