…Turning to the DC Extended Universe now and as we await the Suicide Squad panel at the San Diego Comic-Con, this week has given us a look at the tracklisting for the soundtrack to the DC supervillain team-up as well as the release of twenty one pilots’ song ‘Heathen’ from said soundtrack [check them out here], while director David Ayer has been discussing one of the most controversial aspects of the movie in The Joker’s tattoos: “The tattoos tell a very specific story. Eventually people will decipher them and understand what’s going on, but obviously they’re contentious, any time you do something new it’s contentious. There’s very specific stories and easter eggs in those tattoos. And even his teeth, there’s an entire story behind that which is absolutely canon. It’s putting his history on his body. This Joker is a little more working class, who I believe could live in our world.” As for Harley’s tattoos, Ayer added that: “She did these herself in prison. They’re stick and poke tattoos, prison-style tattoos, that you do when you don’t have a tattoo gun. She did them herself out of boredom and desperation… There’s I Heart Puddin’, a Joker face, a love heart… that’s obviously reflective of her time in prison…”

Meanwhile, if you were hoping to see Gal Gadot’s Diana flying her invisible jet, I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed with the comments from DC Entertainment’s Diane Nelson, who stated that: “There is no invisible jet. Not in this iteration.” Nelson went on to add that: “[The movie] will have its own tone and look – it’s beautiful. There is humor in it, there is real emotion in Diana’s journey in discovering the complexity of man. There’s no better time than now. The overall conversation that’s happening in our culture right now – about having stronger gender equality representation in media and in government and in education and all of it just makes it the perfect time to see a character like Wonder Woman out there…”

The comic, which launched in 1999 and ran for 24 issues, centres on “a special group of people all linked to one extraordinary event, and how they change the world we know into something we only imagined. It offers a new world of superheroes, as 113 children who were in utero when a meteor hit their Illinois hometown were left with special powers. Some of them are being murdered, and when that happens, their powers switch to the remaining “specials,” some of whom want nothing to do with this superhero business…”
