The fourth superhero movie of 2017 swung into cinemas this past week, with Spider-Man: Homecoming on track to top its box office tracking with a domestic opening weekend of around $120 million and a worldwide haul in excess of $250 million. …It looks like Robert Downey Jr. may be looking towards hanging up the Iron Man armor, with the star revealing this week that he wants to call it a day “before it’s embarrassing”: “Everyone says to me it’s like a glove that fits so well. I have to start over every time but I am starting over with a pretty solid base. I just never want to blow it for the last six or seven [Marvel movies] I have done by dropping the ball because I decided to go do it one more time. …Tom Holland has also been looking forward to his next Spider-Man outing in Avengers: Infinity War, stating that: “It needs no teasing. That movie literally needs no teasing. It’s going to be the biggest movie of all time. …Kevin Feige has been talking about Marvel’s next offering Thor: Ragnarok, saying: “I think that we are finding ourselves as we complete Phase Three and finish this 22-movie narrative that it’s working out that way. We did three Iron Man films, three Captain America films, three Thorfilms. Things change drastically in Ragnarok and then build directly into Infinity War.” Meanwhile, Marvel also unveiled the first TV spot for Ragnarok [watch it here], while Funko released promotional images for its upcoming range of tie-in Pop Vinyl, Dorbz, Hero Plushies and Mystery Minis [see here]…
…In other bits and pieces from the big screen side of the MCU, Ant-Man and the Wasp has added Randall Park to its cast in the role of S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Jimmy Woo, while Samuel L. Jackson has been confirmed as returning as Nick Fury alongside his Kong: Skull Island co-star Brie Larson in Captain Marvel. Meanwhile, details of the home-entertainment release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 have been announced – including the news that it will mark Disney’s first 4K Ultra HD release – and Guardians director James Gunn has revealed that he’d previously expressed his interest to Marvel in directing a Hit-Monkey movie, as well as a Hulk/Red Hulk feature…
…Over at Netflix and it has been announced this week that Mustafa Sahkir (The Night Of) and Gabrielle Dennis (Rosewood) have been cast in the upcoming second season of Luke Cage, where they will play the characters of John McIver (a.k.a. Bushmaster) and Tilda Johnson (a.k.a. Nightshade/Nighthawk) respectively. Meanwhile, we also got a couple of new set photos from season two of Jessica Jones, which saw Krysten Ritter’s Jessica getting close to a new mystery love-interest; take a look here…
…As cameras continue to roll on Deadpool 2, some new set photos from the hotly-anticipated 2018 sequel arrived online this week showing Ryan Reynolds in full costume as the Merc with a Mouth; check them out here…
…X-Men: Dark Phoenix is also gearing up to begin production in Toronto, and it’s been reported this week that Olivia Munn has been spotted arriving in the city, leading to speculation that she’ll be reprising her role as Psylocke from X-Men: Apocalypse. Meanwhile, some rumours have also emerged concerning Magneto’s role in the film, and the possible inclusion of Genosha; read them here…
…From one Dark Phoenix to another now, and Famke Janssen has revealed that she believes she’s now done playing Jean Grey in the X-Men franchise, but would be more than happy to return should the opportunity ever arise: ““I think we’re done, but it was really great while it lasted and it lasted for a long time. It’s been nothing but a pleasure working not just as Jean Grey, which was such an honor because comics were so fantastic already, but then the entire cast who I got to play with, all my fellow actors, thespians who are so talented. It was just a wonderful experience. I’m very grateful. Jean Grey is a part of me. I would definitely come back to play her whenever they ask me….”
