After years and years of development, it looks like Sony’s Uncharted movie is finally moving forward.
It was reported a few months ago that the film had dropped from Sony’s schedule, but Deadline are saying that Shawn Levy (Real Steel) has stepped into helm the film. Levy will be the project’s fourth director. The film’s latest screenwriter, Joe Carnahan, had expressed interest in directing but will be busy with Bad Boys For Life.
The latest game in the Uncharted series was praised by critics upon its release, with some calling it the best game ever made. Following the box office success of The Angry Birds Movie and Warcraft, a lot of video game adaptations are moving forward across various studios.
Levy also directed Night at the Museum, Date Night and episodes of Netflix’s Stranger Things which he also produced.
Sony have been trying to get an Uncharted movie off the ground since 2009 when David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook) was attached to direct with Mark Wahlberg, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. Neil Burger (Limitless) jumped on board but eventually left the project with Seth Gordon (King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters) taking over. Since then the script has been re-written by Marianne and Cormac Wibberley (Charlie’s Angels) and Mark Boal (Zero Dark Thirty). Carnahan recently tweeted that he’s happy with how the script is progressing.
