Although at the moment the project only has a director attached – Horrible Bosses’ Seth Gordon – Sony has selected a release date of June 10th, 2016 for their blockbuster cinematic adaptation of the Uncharted line of video games.
The decision comes in the wake of a delay for The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Pretty much everything about that franchise has fallen flat on its face, so maybe it’s a wise move on the part of Sony to test out something new as a summer tentpole release.
Uncharted is already arguably the closest video games have ever come to mimicking a cinematic movie-like experience, so adapting it to the big screen should feel natural and actually yield success; a trait not found in most film adaptations of video games.
If you are inexperienced with the line of video games, below is a synopsis of the first game in the franchise, which should give anyone unfamiliar a rough idea of what to expect.
A descendant of explorer Sir Francis Drake, a treasure hunter named Nathan Drake believes he has learned the whereabouts of El Dorado, the fabled South American golden city, from a cursed golden statue. The search becomes competitive when a rival hunter joins the fray.
Nevertheless, a seemingly concrete release date has been slated, so it’s safe to say that we should be hearing more news about Uncharted soon. More specifically, who the hell is going to play our wise-cracking, back-talking, treasure hunter Nathan Drake. Filming apparently starts early next year, so hopefully us fans of the franchise find out who it will be soon. Don’t worry, it won’t be Mark Wahlberg. His involvement only arose due to his frequent collaboration with original director David O. Russell.
Once again, Uncharted will be released on June 10th, 2016
