The official trailer for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts has been released, giving our first in-depth look at the film’s plot as the Autobots and Maximals unite to defeat a surprising and deadly villain: Unicron, the giant, planet-eating transformer who is the form of ultimate evil in the Transformers franchise. Watch the trailer below…
Unicron was first introduced in the 1986 Transformers: The Movie, the animated film that bridged the gap between the second and third seasons of the original Transformers series. In that film, Unicron is a nigh unstoppable force that consumes whole planets for power and is responsible for transforming Megatron into Galvatron after the Decepticon’s fatal fight with Optimus Prime. The only thing that can stop him is the Autobot Matrix of Leadership which Optimus passes on to the next Autobot leader and Unicron tasks Galvatron to hunt it down and destroy it.
Since his introduction, Unicron has often been depicted as the only being the Autobots and Decepticons unify against as neither faction can stop him on their own. He’s been a main antagonist in the Transformers: Armada trilogy of series, Transformers Prime and the IDW comics. He was somewhat introduced in live-action in Transformers: The Last Knight as a slumbering presence within Earth’s crust with the post-credits scene teasing his full awakening, though The Last Knight‘s poor reception and box office returns put an end to that storyline and Michael Bay’s films as Paramount and Hasbro opted for a soft reboot of the live-action franchise with Bumblebee and Rise of the Beasts.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is directed by Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II) and features a cast that includes Anthony Ramos, Dominique Fishback, Luna Lauren Velez, and Tobe Nwigwe, along with Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime, Ron Perlman as Optimus Primal, Michelle Yeoh as Airazor and Pete Davidson as Mirage.
Returning to the action and spectacle that have captured moviegoers around the world, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will take audiences on a ‘90s globetrotting adventure with the Autobots and introduce a whole new faction of Transformer – the Maximals – to the existing battle on earth between Autobots and Decepticons.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts arrives in cinemas on June 8th 2023.
