US Box Office Report – The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 breaks 2014 records with $123 million opening

November 23, 2014 by admin

Having broken Friday opening records for 2014, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 has now smashed weekend records for the year – despite being the lowest of the franchise.

Beating out all of the competition, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 took a whopping $123 million over the weekend, topping previous record holder Transformers: Age of Extinction‘s $100 million. With an impressive showing overseas, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 sits on a worldwide total of $275 million. However, it’s not all great news for Lionsgate as the movie is the lowest opening of the franchise with The Hunger Games taking $152.5 million and its sequel The Hunger Games: Catching Fire earning $158 million. Could it be series fatigue, or is the franchise just not bringing in viewers from outside of the book fanbase?

Disney’s Big Hero 6 continued to perform well, adding another $20 million to its $135 million total while Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar retains third place with $15.1 million. The sci-fi epic, which has battled its mixed reviews well, now sits at $135.7 million domestic and $346 million worldwide.

Last week’s number one Dumb and Dumber To fell to fourth, dropping a whopping 61% from last week to earn $13.8 million – despite being shown on slightly more screens than last week.

In other box office news, Gone Girl has made it 8 weeks in the top 10 and is now David Fincher’s second most successful movie to date. Having added another $2.8 million, Gone Girl now sits at $156.8 million domestic and 327.7 million worldwide. However, the movie will need to earn another $23 million in order to beat Seven. The little engine that could Birdman also had another great week, taking $1.8 million from just 862 screens.

Here’s your top 10 and their domestic totals:
