US Box Office Report – Ouija scares its way to $20 million

October 27, 2014 by admin

US Box Office weekend report for 24th – 26th October 2014

Following in the footsteps of Annabelle, low budget horror movie Ouija has opened to an impressive $20 million, beating out Fury and fellow newcomer John Wick in a weekend that also beat them same period last year.

Opening in 2,858 theatres, Ouija was this week’s clear winner, averaging $7,000 per screening, despite the mediocre and poor reviews. Ouija was made for an estimated $5 million and stars Olivia Cooke and Ana Coto and directed by first timer Stiles White.

Looking to be the “come back movie” for Keanu Reeves, John Wick came in second this week with a taking of $14.1 million, averaging $5,465 from each its screenings, knocking last week’s number one Fury down to third. The film fell 45.2% from last week to take $13 million, giving it a worldwide total of $57.2 million. Listen to our podcast review of Fury using the player below:

David Fincher’s Gone Girl has now made it to a domestic total of $124 million and a worldwide total of $242 million. Taking inflation into account, Gone Girl is now the fourth most successful movie for Fincher behind Panic Room, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Seven. Listen to our Gone Girl review using the player below:

The biggest climber this week was St. Vincent, which opened in a limited release two weeks ago but is now on wide release. Increasing takings by 1,110%, St. Vincent (starring Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy) came in at 7th with $8 million.
