US Box Office weekend report for 24th – 26th October 2014
Following in the footsteps of Annabelle, low budget horror movie Ouija has opened to an impressive $20 million, beating out Fury and fellow newcomer John Wick in a weekend that also beat them same period last year.
Opening in 2,858 theatres, Ouija was this week’s clear winner, averaging $7,000 per screening, despite the mediocre and poor reviews. Ouija was made for an estimated $5 million and stars Olivia Cooke and Ana Coto and directed by first timer Stiles White.
Looking to be the “come back movie” for Keanu Reeves, John Wick came in second this week with a taking of $14.1 million, averaging $5,465 from each its screenings, knocking last week’s number one Fury down to third. David Fincher’s Gone Girl has now made it to a domestic total of $124 million and a worldwide total of $242 million. Taking inflation into account, Gone Girl is now the fourth most successful movie for Fincher behind Panic Room, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Seven. The biggest climber this week was St. Vincent, which opened in a limited release two weeks ago but is now on wide release. Increasing takings by 1,110%, St. Vincent (starring Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy) came in at 7th with $8 million.
