Venom director says there is no hero in the movie, explains the lack of the white spider logo

July 24, 2018 by Samuel Brace

The director of Venom, Ruben Fleischer, has revealed that the film features “no real hero”.

Venom, of course, is one of Spider-Man’s most formidable foes and with the character starring in his own solo movie without Peter Parker, you might expect a hero to take his place.

Well, according to Ruben Fleischer when speaking to Entertainment Weekly, his film won’t include a proper hero, not in the shape of Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock or anyone else:

“I was really excited about just bringing something new to the genre. I feel like the tone of our movie is really original and distinctive, which is totally appropriate for the character, as Venom is a darker, more violent, more menacing character. I think our movie feels distinctive from a lot of the other superhero movies, in part because there’s no real hero in it.

“So it’s just a movie that kind of stands on its own, led by incredible performances by fine actors such as [Tom Hardy and Riz Ahmed]. But Tom really just is — I think people are going to be blown away by what he brings to the table with both Eddie Brock and Venom. His performance is incredible, and sets the bar for the film.”

Meanwhile, Fleischer also went on to reveal why the movie version of Venom is missing his iconic white spider logo:

“If you look at the comics, in Venom, there is just elements of white within his suit,” says Fleischer. “Because our character does not originate from Spider-Man, it makes no sense to put a spider on his chest. We tried to be as accurate as we possibly could, even though some people feel it’s inaccurate, but there is a lot of white and we wanted to give him a distinctive pattern.”

“If you have an all-black character, especially in night scenes, he just kind of disappears,” he continues. “Since we couldn’t use the Spider-Man symbol, we wanted to give him another graphic element, and those veins that kind of form a shape on his chest was an original idea that we just thought looked really cool.”

It’s certainly going to be interesting to see how the film presents the villain as the star character but does a lack of a hero in Venom excite you or would you rather have seen Spider-Man play a significant role?
