Chris Sanderson reviews Deus Ex GO…
I’m back this week doing a review for my very first Deus Ex Game, and it’s on mobile no less! Having never played a game in the Deus Ex series and having more than a few friends try to convince me to get into it, I thought I might give it a go on iOS to see what the fuss was all about. Of course while it’s nothing compared to the size and scope of a AAA game, it does do its best to rope you in and give you an array of levels to make your way through.
The game spends no time taking you through lots of menus or tutorials and instead throws you straight into the action. No backstory build up is something I found a little odd – surely for a series like this you want to let your established fan base know exactly what the situation is? Is this continuing from the last game or is this just a separate game altogether with no ties to the main series? As a new player I was quite baffled by this. Starting the game it was nice not to be spoon fed and treated like a 5-year-old who’s just picked up a controller for the first time. The game’s story progresses through each level and has you in contact with your superior called Miller, in the form of subtitles at the bottom of the screen. This was something where at times I missed what was going on in the story as I was too busy trying not to get myself spotted or killed while it progressed, but missions are easily repayable which will help if you miss anything as I did. The game gets progressively harder by introducing new enemy types as you go as well as new ways to interact with the world and get through the level to safety and your objective:
Hacking – You can go to a yellow terminal and hack a floor tile or turrets to fire and force them to fire on enemy guards or walker robots. Handy if you find yourself in a tight spot.
Invisibility – In the form of a blue pickup you can turn yourself invisible for one tile movement, which helps if there is a guard blocking the path to success!
Melee Attack – And if you happen to be beside or behind an enemy target you can move to their tile and take them down with a devastating attack assassin’s creed style via a blade on your arm.
The game introduces you to new enemies as your progress through the story, the main of which are enemy guards working for an outfit known as Ironflank, these guys when they spot you use what is called a Titan Shield, some sort of unbreakable armour that makes them immortal until they lose sight of you and return to the original tile they were on. As well are turreted who kill you if you enter their line of sight or walker bots that will either zap you to death or stomp you to death, all fun ways to die really.0 The fun thing about it is each enemy has a weakness and the aim of the game is to be as stealthy as possible, something I love being a fan of the stealth genre, so its gains a few points on that front.
Deus Ex GO is a game by Square Enix Montreal responsible for Hitman GO, Lara Croft GO and Hitman Sniper Challenge for mobile so suffice to say they have experience of building these types of mobile games, with this game being the first mobile game I’ve played from SE, I will say I wasn’t very intrigued at the beginning of the game as it felt like a generic touch game, however as the game went on I found myself getting more and more attached to it, the levels although got harder I knew how to figure out ways around the puzzles and it made me feel like I was some sort of hero. Before I realised I was playing a game and am just a regular person again. Immersion is the name of the game and although light on story it does a good job of keeping you playing from level to level. After you have played through an area of the game and completed the puzzles in that area, the game gives you a breather by taking you back to the main menu and saving your progress.
The game supports cloud saving /which means as you switch from device to device within the same eco system you’ll be able to pick up exactly where you left off which makes for an intuitive experience.
I really ended up enjoying the game a lot and although I haven’t finished the main story there are over 50 missions in the game, but it doesn’t end there, Square Enix are adding new missions every weekday, that’s Monday to Friday just to be clear. On top of this the game allows you to link your Square Enix membership account and unlock Praxis Kits which will transfer into Deus Ex: Mankind Divided which is a neat feature for those who want to unlock extra content in the main game.
Pros:
+ Great 3D graphics for a mobile game.
+ Harder Missions the more you play.
+ Requires you to plan out each level.
+ Interacts with Mankind Divided.
Cons:
– Lacklustre story.
– Not clear of the games link to other games being new to the series.
Rating: 8/10
