Video Review – Beast sees Idris Elba face an evil lion in a lackluster battle

August 24, 2022 by EJ Moreno

EJ Moreno with a video review of Beast…

With the premise of Idris Elba fighting a lion, you’d expect an epic battle of campiness and brutality. Sadly, Beast lacks both in what our critic EJ Moreno describes as a lackluster human vs. animal film. In the grand tradition of films like Jaws, Orca, or Anaconda, Beast sadly doesn’t live up to its predecessor.

Baltasar Kormákur directs Beast from a screenplay by Ryan Engle, based on a story by Jaime Primak Sullivan. The film stars Idris Elba, Iyana Halley, Leah Sava Jeffries, and Sharlto Copley.

Idris Elba plays Dr. Nate Daniels, a recently widowed husband who returns to South Africa, where he first met his wife, on a long-planned trip with their daughters to a game reserve managed by Martin Battles (Sharlto Copley, Russian Doll series, Maleficent), an old family friend and wildlife biologist. But what begins as a journey of healing jolts into a fearsome fight for survival when a lion, a survivor of blood-thirsty poachers who now sees all humans as the enemy, begins stalking them.

Beast is out now in the US and opens in the UK this Friday.
