Vince Gilligan developing Jim Jones limited series for HBO

September 10, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Vince Gilligan, creator of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, is set to explore The Peoples Temple of the Disciples of Christ cult and its leader Jim Jones with Raven, a limited series which he will write for HBO. Breaking Bad director Michelle MacLaren will helm the series, as well as executive producing alongside Gilligan and actress Octavia Spencer.

Based on Tim Reiterman’s book Raven: The Untold Story of Jim Jones and His People – which is described as “the definitive history of Peoples Temple from its idealistic beginnings to its terrible end in Jonestown” – the series “will focus on Jim Jones but also on his followers, who, by and large, were ordinary people of good will. It tells the mysterious story of how so many of them came to give up their lives for this man.”

Jones was the founder and leader of the Peoples Temple, which once boasted over 20,000 members, but became infamous after the 1978 mass murder-suicide in Jonestown, Guyana, where 918 members of the cult (including almost 300 children) died after ingesting Flavor Aid laced with cyanide.
