Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan is teaming up with Disney to develop a new version of the classic Jack & the Beanstalk fairytale simply titled Beanstalk. Deadline are reporting that Gilligan will co-produce and possibly even direct.
Double Emmy Award winner Thomas Schnauz – who wrote seven episodes of Breaking Bad and more recently two episodes of Better Call Saul – will work as screenwriter on the project and will adapt a detailed outline previously written by Gilligan.
The previous adaptation – which wasn’t funded by Disney – was Bryan Singer’s 2013 Jack the Giant Slayer starring Nicholas Hoult. It didn’t reap much of a profit at the box office and Disney are hoping that Gilligan can resurrect the classic fable. Beanstalk is just another in a long list of revisionist tales and remakes being lined up by Disney. Recent titles being given the live-action treatment are Beauty & the Beast, Mulan, Pinocchio, Pete’s Dragon and The Jungle Book (did I miss any?). Robin Hood is also being rumoured as a possible live-action remake but hasn’t been given the green light yet.
No further details are known at this point but I’m sure it won’t be long until the obligatory Aaron Paul casting rumours begin.
