Viola Davis is tackling her most physically demanding role yet, and it seems like it’s paying off. In the first trailer for The Woman King, we follow the story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s.
Davis stars as General Nanisca, preparing the next generation of fighters for a battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life.
In this first look, we also get to see what co-stars Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, and the remarkable John Boyega are doing in this historical epic. Check out the first trailer below along with the poster, synopsis and official promo images…
Inspired by true events that took place in the Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of 18th and 19th century Africa, The Woman King “follows Nanisca (Viola Davis), general of the all-female military unit, and Nawi (Thuso Mbedu), an ambitious recruit, who together fought enemies who violated their honor, enslaved their people, and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for.”
Gina Prince-Bythewood directs The Woman King, which stars Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and John Boyega.
The Woman King is set for release on September 16th.
