Viola Davis has signed on to appear in Widows, the next project from director Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave), which has been scripted by Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn and is based upon the British TV series created by Lynda La Plante.
Widows follows four women who team up to complete a robbery after their husbands are killed on the job. According to Variety, Jennifer Lawrence was also approached for one of the female leads, but had to pass due to scheduling conflicts.
The film is being produced by Iain Canning and Emile Sherman of See-Saw Films, who won an Oscar for The King’s Speech, and also teamed with McQueen on his 2011 film Shame. Film4 is co-financing the project along with New Regency.
