Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. Pictures has enlisted newcomer Nick Yarborough to write a script for a prequel to the 2001 film Training Day starring Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke.
According to the site, the as-yet-untitled prequel will take place around a decade prior to the Antoine Fuqua-directed prequel and pick up around the time of the L.A. Riots which occurred in the wake of the infamous Rodney King incident.
This won’t be the first Training Day spinoff, as CBS aired a TV series set 15 years after the film during 2016/17, although it was cancelled after a single season following the death of star Bill Paxton.
Training Day followed Ethan Hawke’s rookie L.A. narcotics officer during his first day on the job, as he finds himself partnered up with Denzel Washington’s corrupt detective. Both actors were nominated for Oscars for their work in the movie, with Washington honoured with the Academy Award for Best Actor.
