According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Brothers is aggressively developing a solo Aquaman film! The studio has hired two writers to pen two different drafts, and will then pick and develop whichever script they like best.
The two writers on the docket are Will Beall (Gangster Squad) and Kurt Johnstad (300, 300: Rise of an Empire). There’s no word yet on when we could see Aquaman take to the high seas in his own solo adventure, but we know for sure that his film will be part of the recently-announced slate of nine untitled DC films slated for release after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice from 2016 to 2020.
Will Beall also infamously wrote a Justice League draft that the studio reportedly hated and tossed out, so it’s curious to see them return to him for Aquaman. Perhaps he didn’t quite nail the team-up portions of the film, but impressed the studio with what he had to say about Aquaman? It’s certainly possible.
We don’t know when Aquaman’s film will get his solo film, but he’ll be making an appearance in Batman v Superman, played (unofficially) by Jason Momoa. Zack Snyder recently called a Detroit radio station to defend Aquaman’s honor, so this is just the latest in a series of news stories that suggest the studio is taking the character very seriously, and are actively trying to find a way for audiences to take him seriously too.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on March 25, 2016.
