It has been a while since something spooky has stepped forth from The Conjuring Universe, but Warner Bros. have just used their CinemaCon panel to summon The Nun 2 into production.
According to Collider, little more than an image was shown during the Warner Bros. sizzle reel, with no further details, including release date and potential return of director Corin Hardy (The Hallows) or Bonnie Aarons as the titular demon Valak.
The Nun was critically derided when it was released in 2018, but went on to become The Conjuring Universe’s most lucrative spook, grossing $365M at the worldwide box-office. It’s testament to the power of the brand born from James Wan’s superb 2013 horror The Conjuring, the sequel to which, 2021’s The Devil Made Me Do It, was the last film from the Universe to be released, and that still managed to earn over $200M at the global box-office during the height of the pandemic. Throw in the fact it was part of the day-and-date HBO Max release strategy and there’s little surprise that Warner Bros. are dusting off their habits.

Malignant’s Akela Cooper was tasked with writing The Nun 2 back in 2019, and hopefully that remains the same given how ludicrously brilliant that film turned out to be.
