Though it has had quite a bit of tension behind the scenes, American Gods is set to make its return in the first few months of 2019. To build anticipation for its return, Starz has released the first three minutes from the second season premiere via the show’s Twitter account. Picking up from the events of the first season’s finale, the opening sees the New Gods trying to regroup against Mr. Wednesday.
American Gods is based on Neil Gaiman’s novel of the same name that sees the gods of old, mythical lore fighting against the modern gods of technology with recently released convict and conman Shadow Moon caught in the middle of their growing battle. The series stars Ricky Whittle (The 100) and Ian McShane (John Wick) as Shadow and Wednesday respectively, with Emily Browning, Pablo Schreiber, Bruce Langely and Crispin Glover also starring.
The series was created and developed by Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) and Michael Green (Kings), but they were fired after the show’s first season. Jesse Alexander, who had previously worked with Fuller on Hannibal and Star Trek: Discovery, was then hired co-showrunner, but he was also fired rather abruptly in September, leaving production for the end of season two ‘in disarray’. Despite the problems, season two of American Gods is finally around the corner.

When Shadow Moon is released from prison, he meets the mysterious Mr. Wednesday, and a storm begins to brew. Little does Shadow know, this storm will change the course of his entire life. Left adrift by the recent, tragic death of his wife, and suddenly hired as Mr. Wednesday’s bodyguard, Shadow finds himself in the center of a world that he struggles to understand. It’s a world where magic is real, where the Old Gods fear both irrelevance and the growing power of the New Gods, like Technology and Media. Mr. Wednesday seeks to build a coalition of Old Gods to defend their existence in this new America and reclaim some of the influence that they’ve lost. As Shadow travels across the country with Mr. Wednesday, he struggles to accept this new reality and his place in it.
A council at the House on the Rock explodes into chaos, sending deities both Old and New on quests across America that will converge on Cairo, Illinois: forcing Shadow to carve out a place as a believer in this strange new world of living gods — a dark world where change demands commitment and faith requires terrible sacrifice.
American Gods will premiere on March 10th, 2019.
