Zac Efron’s new film We Are Your Friends has found itself in the Hollywood record books for all the wrong reasons as it suffered one of the worst opening weekends of all time.
Grossing a pretty dismal $1.8 million over the last weekend (good enough to scrape into the Top 15 and a result of just $758 per theatre), We Are Your Friends had one of the worse opening weekends ever for a major studio film opening in over 2,000 cinemas. It only cost Warner Bros. around $2 million to distribute, but given the exposure of the film and that Efron is a sizeable star, this is not the result they had hoped for.
We are Your Friends joins a unique line-up of films that have opened in a similar amount of cinemas (2,000+) and the same fate: family film Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure opened to just $443,901 back in 2012, animated film Delgo grossed $511,920 in 2008, and the anniversary re-release of Saw in 2014 grossed $650,051.
