Sony has just made another addition to the cast of its Marvel film Kraven The Hunter. According to Deadline, Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) will reportedly play Calypso in the film.
Calypso is “a voodoo priestess who utilizes magic potions, and besides being an adversary of Spider-Man, she is also the occasional partner and lover of Kraven.”
DeBose, who is fresh off a Screen Actors Guild Award for Supporting Actress for Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, joins Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), Russell Crowe (The Nice Guys) and Fred Hechinger (The White Lotus) in the film.
Apart from West Side Story, DeBose is also known for her role in Netflix’s musical The Prom and as one of the original cast members of Broadway’s Hamilton, where she played a side character named ‘The Bullet’ who is often an omen and representation of death.
Kraven the Hunter will be part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, taking place in the studio’s shared continuity with its two Venom films starring Tom Hardy and April’s Morbius starring Jared Leto. In addition to Kraven, Sony also has a Madame Web movie in the works, with Dakota Johnson recently cast in the title role.
Kraven The Hunter is being directed by J.C. Chandor (Triple Frontier) from a script by Art Marcum, Matt Holloway and Richard Wenk. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing.
